New album by Map & Atlases, obviously is less mathy but it haves the same good quality of each record released. People often have problems with bands new albums, don’t know why they don’t understand a band can’t be stuck in the same sound for years… i honestly loved “Trees, Swallows, Houses”, it was a sick record, but when “Perch Patchwork” was released and many people was saying it was nothing compared with their past works, ha. The point is that you are free to like or dislike a new album, yeah, but don’t even think a new output will be in the same sound for years. Anyway, this new album sounds pretty much more indie rock/pop, but it also has math-rock riffs here and there, just listen with attention. Highly recommended.

  1. nice little writeup! i totally agree with you on the subject of this particular band's progression–i initially fell in love with them when i was neck deep into mathy stuff at the time–around the time "trees, swallows, houses" came out. overall, by the time "perch patchwork" was finally released, i thought it made total sense (songs like "the ongoing horrible" and even "witch" feel very similar) and i actually enjoy the more streamlined pop sensibilities they've been leaning toward. here's to my first listen~
